Last Friday at Braunschweig’s TU, after surviving a winter semester with the usual early starts on Friday mornings, team ‘Regional Studies’ finally voted for their greatest Briton. Freddie Mercury, with an impressive 17 votes, emerged victorious! In his acceptance speech, Freddie graciously thanked his bandmates, reminding everyone that without Queen, this win would have been a solo act.

A total of 27 nominations came from all corners of British life – science, arts, sports, food & drink, and of course, politics and public life. After a heated round of presentations and passionate debates, the results were announced with no hard feelings. It was a close race, with Charlotte Brontë and Jane Austen tying for second place with 16 votes each, while David Bowie and Lady Diana Spencer each earned 15 votes – all incredible figures who just fell short of the top spot.

There were a few surprising outcomes, though. Henry VIII didn’t get any votes – perhaps if he had been nicer to his wives, he might have earned a few more fans? And, despite being a polarizing figure, Tony Blair also failed to secure any votes – maybe next time, a little less drama, Tony? Below are the full results😊
