- What two cities have hosted the Winter Olympics twice?
- What event begins before the opening ceremony
Summary of the discussion of why the Olympic games in China are controversial
- China’s government and businesses are spending $3.9bn on the Games.
- The organisers will spray about 1.2 million cubic metres of artificial snow onto competition sites (because the region around Beijing is so dry) – the Chinese have built a 60km pipeline. What might the environmental impact be?
- Many countries – such as the US, UK and Canada – have declared a diplomatic boycott of the Games. They will all send athletes to compete, no ministers or officials will attend.
- Do you think this is the right response?

In today’s English-Lunch we were talking about the upcoming Winter Olympics in China. Here are the answers to the above quiz!
Hey Dean,
here are some themes that we can speak about next week:
Regards and thanks
Sandra
My favourite one is the preparation for a Netflix marathon!
Again it was a very interesting lunchtime 🙂
Dean, obviously a big fan of all sorts of sports, tried to talk with us about the Winter Olympics in China and none of us had any idea about it. LOL.
But while talking about it we suddenly remembered Eddy the Eagle, this wonderful British ski jumper, Tonya Harding, the US American beast on ice and the famous olympic bob team from Jamaica. Names like Jens Weißflog (ski jumper), Kathy Witt (princess on ice) and Ingemar Stenmark (Swedish ski racer) were mentioned also.
We learned a lot, even that before the official beginning of the winter games they will start with curling (some sort of Boule on ice). For me, who studied in Austria, curling in the garden of our clubhouse is strongly connected with drinking and a lot of fun. Cheers!
At least this lunchtime gave me the impulse to watching winter games during the next days – thanks to Dean.
Now I´m looking forward to our next session and hope that I´m able to join our discussion about the winter games.
So, Dean it is your meeting and up to you to decide about the theme. Please let me know what do you want to speak about next week 😉
Thanks for the all feedback – will do my best to get everything in!
Next weeks topic will be “movies, films and series” – it is award season (really!).
Speak soon!
