“Belfast” (IMDB 7.4, Prime USA). Set in the late 1960s in Northern Ireland during the conflict between Catholics and Protestants – a family must decide to stay or flee.
“CODA” (IMDB 8.1, Apple). Ruby’s family is deaf, but she isn’t – she loves music and wants to go to Berklee College to study music but needs to choose between helping the family’s fishing business in Massachusetts and her love of music.
CODA = Child of Deaf Adults
“Don’t Look Up” (IMDB 7,2 Netflix). A black comedy in which scientists discover a comet hurtling on a collision course towards earth… but nobody is interested. Leonardo Di Caprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep with her “Don’t Look Up” Trump style baseball hat.
“Drive My Car” (IMDB 7,9, Disney+). A road movie in Japan, where famous actor Yusuke Kafuku – who is recovering from the death of his wife – is in charge of a new production of ‘Uncle Vanya’ at a theatre in Hiroshima, where he meets Misaki Watari (his chauffeur) who helps him deal not only with tensions between cast and crew but also with mysteries from his own past.
“Dune” (IMDB 8,1, Prime/Apple (€)). Remake of the 1984 movie and based on the famous science fiction book by Frank Herbert about the son of a rich galactic family who is involved in a political power struggle centred around planetary resources.
Are you a science fiction fan? Maybe a Star Wars fan or perhaps a ‘trekkie’?
“King Richard” (IMDB 7,6, Prime). Based on a true story with Will Smith.
Father Richard Williams coaches his daughters Venus and Serena and helps them become tennis superstars.
Sound familiar?
“Licorice Pizza” (IMDB 7,9, Online?). Set in the San Fernando Valley (northern Los Angeles) in 1973 with music from Wings, Bowie, Suzi Quattro to the Doors and all about first love.
Do you love liquorice? Would you eat a liquorice pizza?
“Nightmare Alley” (IMDB 7.2, Streaming?). Remake of American 1947 thriller (Prime) and directed by Guillermo del Toro. Based on the book of the same name from 1946, the protagonist Stanton wants to deceive a dangerous businessman with the help of a psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett).
Have you seen other movies by Guillermo del Toro? E.g., The shape of water?
“The Power of the Dog” (IMDB 6.9, Netflix). Set in Montana in the 1920s (filmed in New Zealand!). Benedict Cumberbatch (with his pretty good American accent) is a cattle rancher and intimidates everyone around him. Things change when his brother gets married and he meets her son…
Do you like western movies? Do you remember John Wayne?
“West Side Story” (IMDB 7.8, Prime/Apple (€)), directed by Steven Spielberg.
Remake – along the same lines of the 1961 movie – using the plot of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Set in New York, two youngsters from rival (singing and dancing) gangs fall in love.
Did you like Shakespeare at school?
“House of Gucci” (IMBD 6.8, ?) with Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani was NOT nominated for best picture. Why not?
