ELunch 16.11 – George Orwell and the ‘Lady with the lamp’!

… this week we had 2 more nominations for our greatest Briton.

Firstly George Orwell, the English novelist who is most famous for his novels Animal Farm and 1984 (written in 1949). It was also interesting to listen to the discussion afterwards especially the comparison of the novel 1984 to some of the things happening around us today.

We also very much enjoyed finding out about the ‘mother of modern nursing’, the great Florence Nightingale. Did you know that her parents had two children and named them after the cities they were born in!? Lucky I wasn’t named after my birth city of Northampton…

I also had the chance to give a sneak peak of my presentation on Rowan Atkinson, which I am hoping to give next week. Check out the link below, which was from a show called ‘Not the Nine O’ Clock news’ in 1980.

If would also be great if today’s presenters could add their presentations and links in the comments section below – that way we can share our nominations with the rest of the English-Please community!

Look forward to hearing / seeing you next week

  2. It´s a hard joke about deafness, but at the time when this video was taken we had another attidude towards this sort of black humour. And be aware that this video is against imbecilic ideas and not against people who had lost their hearing.

  3. Here is some information about “The Lady with the Lamp” Florence Nightingale.
